From 1971 to 1975 he studied at the Moscow Art - Industrial College. Kalinin. In 1985 he graduated from the Department of Ceramics and Glass LVHPU them. V.I. Mukhina. Since 1985 he has been working at the Leningrad Porcelain Factory named after M.V. Lomonosov (Imperial Porcelain Factory since 2005).

From 1991 to 1998 - the main artist of the Lomonosov porcelain factory. Since 1991, a member of the Union of Artists.

In 2008, Sergey Sokolov's personal exhibition Polyphony was held at the Gallery of Contemporary Art of Porcelain. In 2015, Sergei Nikolayevich Sokolov by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin for his contribution to the development of arts and crafts was awarded the honorary title “Honored Artist of the Russian Federation”. The works of Sergei Sokolov are in collections of leading museums in the country and private collections.
